Linking your Way to SEO Success: How to Use Links in SEO

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to your SEO campaign. Most people don’t know it but links are a secret contributing factor to SEO. You can add links to your webpage so that your search engine rankings will improve. Here are some tips that you can do in order to fully utilize links in SEO.

  • In SEO, incoming links are more important.

Most SEO practitioners are under the impression that outbound links are more important that incoming links. Incoming links, also commonly known as backlinks, are links that webmasters get from other relevant sites so that when people click on these links, they will be led to their website. Placing incoming links should not be done haphazardly. It is important that you place them on sites which have high pagerank or website rankings. Another point to consider is the level of relevance between your site and the other site you will choose to have the incoming links placed.

Incoming links will also increase your traffic. Think of it as a way of promoting your website through the use of other websites. For example Google, which is one of the most popular search engines in the internet, measures the quality of these links as a way of determining how important the website is. When it comes to ranking websites, Google takes into consideration the quality of incoming links that the website has.

  • You can also use link building in your site.

One of the techniques that SEO practitioners use is link building.  There are many different practices for link building.  Some that are whitehat and some that are more blackhat.  While we do not endorse blackhat techniques, it is important to be familiar with them so you can identify and understand when your competitors may be engaged in blackhat SEO.

The best way to get links is through natural sources.  Press releases, blogs, Digg, Delicious, quizzes are all great ways to get natural links to your site.  Natural links are best because they put you at risk for getting banned by Google.

Another technique that is more “greyhat” is to buy links.  Many companies buy links from advertising networks.  This is a somewhat riskier but common technique that has a good deal of impact on search engine rankings that you should be aware of.

Reciporal Linking or link exchange is also another common technique.  This is where partners may link to each other’s sites and boost their search engine rankings as a result.  Three-way Linking is a more blackhat technique that is similar to Reciprocal Linking, but the main difference is that it involves three different websites. For example, you own Website A and you put up a Website B’s link in your site. Website B will put up Website C’s link in Website B and in turn, Website C will put up Website A’s link in his site.

  • If you’re putting up links in your website, don’t do any of the following:

Link farms are done by putting up a lot of outbound links in your site regardless if they are relevant to your site or not. Other people also use hidden links wherein they appear invisible to the viewers, but the search engine spiders’ will still detect them.  We strongly suggest that you avoid these techniques.

Remember that when it comes to SEO, both outbound and inbound links are important. It’s just a matter of how you use them. If you will be able to use it to your full advantage then your SEO campaign will surely be successful.
