Common Myths About Search Engines

If you’re planning on using Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in your website, then you should know that you also need to know how search engines work. One of the many benefits of SEO is that it will enable your site to climb up the search engine rankings by optimizing your website content using techniques and practices. If you have a good understanding of how search engine works then you will also have a highly successful SEO campaign.

However, it is unavoidable that myths and misconceptions surface about search engines. The main question is how can you know whether it is a search engine fact or a myth that should be debunked? Read along and find out several myths about search engines.

Myth No. 1 – Search engines consider meta tags as the most important part of your site

It is believed that search engines look primarily into your meta tags when they are indexing your website. In reality, search engines like Google place a lot less weight on your site’s meta tags than you might think because some website owners have the tendency to abuse the use of meta tags.

Myth No. 2 – Re-submitting your website to search engines will improve your ranking.

Submitting your site more than once to search engines will not give you any benefit and it will just increase your SEO expenses.  Re-submitting your site to search engines will not harm your rankings but at the same time it will not increase your ranking. This is usually a tactic done by submission sites so that you will avail of their services more than once. It is just a money making scheme and you should not fall prey to it.

Myth No. 3 – Submitting your site to thousands and thousands of search engines helps your rankings.

In reality, the total number of search engines out there in the internet is not relevant. This is just another marketing strategy done by submission programs and websites in order to bring in more customers who will pay for their services. If ever you choose one of these programs, here is what will happen: your site will be submitted to directories also known as ‘link farms’ where a long list of links will be displayed in their site but your link will only be displayed for a short time because the newer submissions will push the old submissions down the page.

Myth No. 4 – We should build our website and bring an SEO expert to fix it.

This is a common misconception that companies have when it comes to SEO. It is better to have an understanding of how SEO and search engines work before you make your own website so that you will be able to make your website based on SEO and search engine principles. This is a better option rather than build a complete website and once it is finished already, you will bring in an SEO expert to fix it - as the expenses will be many times more if you have the wrong information architecture.

There are a lot more myths surrounding search engines and the four myths mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg. I suggest that you continue to educate yourself when it comes to SEO and search engines so that you start the right way which will lead to a successful SEO campaign.
